At St. Peter’s Independent School, All Pupils learn French starting in Prep 2.

At Key stage 2, pupils are encouraged to enjoy lessons whilst developing their confidence when using the target language to communicate in front of their peers and to practice correct pronunciation and intonation as well as consolidating skills learnt in other curriculum areas.

Key Stage 3:

Language content and grammar are taught and practised through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities.

Form 1 (Year 7)

Aspects of grammar, including regular and irregular verb forms in the present tense, reflexive verbs, use of the infinitive, the near future tense, vocabulary, giving opinions and reasons and adjectival agreement are taught through topic areas such as self, family and friends, my school, hobbies and leisure time activities, where I live, eating out and holiday destinations. Inter-cultural awareness is developed through exploring differences between French and English and the use of a bilingual dictionary is developed.

Form 2 (Year 8)

Use of verb forms in the present tense is extended, use of the near future tense is consolidated and the students are introduced to the perfect tense, the imperfect tense and modal verbs in the present tense. Progression is towards using three tenses together and a variety of language structures. Topic areas include TV, cinema and reading habits, Internet use, Paris, fashion, music, relationships and ambitions.

Form 3 (Year 9)

The perfect tense is used in a range of contexts, use of the imperfect tense is extended and the students are introduced to the simple future and conditional tenses. Students are expected to give opinions and to justify them. More complex structures are introduced including the use of emphatic and direct object pronouns. Grammar and language awareness are taught through topics such as healthy lifestyle, the world of work, future plans, holiday preferences, rights and responsibilities.   

GCSE

At KS4 pupils currently take the AQA French GCSE (8658)

The new 8658 French AQA specification covers three distinct themes.
Students are expected to understand and provide information and opinions about these themes relating to their own experiences and those of other people, including people in countries/communities where French is spoken.

GCSE French has a Foundation Tier (grades 1–5) and a Higher Tier (grades 4–9). Students must take all four question papers at the same tier. All question papers must be taken in the same series.

Paper 1: Listening Understanding and responding to different types of spoken language.
                 Written exam: 35 minutes (Foundation Tier), 45 minutes (Higher Tier)

Paper 2: Speaking Communicating and interacting effectively in speech for a variety of purposes.

                 7–9 minutes (Foundation Tier) + preparation time
                 10–12 minutes (Higher Tier) + preparation time

                 Role-play – 15 marks (2 minutes at Foundation Tier; 2 minutes at Higher Tier)
                 Photo card – 15 marks (2 minutes at Foundation Tier; 3 minutes at Higher Tier)
                 General conversation – 30 marks (3–5 minutes at Foundation Tier; 5–7 minutes at
                           Higher Tier)

Paper 3: Reading Understanding and responding to different types of written language. 
                 Written exam: 45 minutes (Foundation Tier), 1 hour (Higher Tier)
                 Section A – questions in English, to be answered in English or non-verbally
                 Section B – questions in French, to be answered in French or non-verbally
                 Section C – translation from French into English (a minimum of 35 words for
                                       Foundation Tier and 50 words for Higher Tier)

Paper 4: Writing Communicating effectively in writing for a variety of purposes.
                 Written exam: 1 hour (Foundation Tier), 1 hour 15 minutes (Higher Tier)
                 Writing on a given theme – a longer and a shorter written task.
                 Translation into French.
