As has always been the case music is about performing, composing and listening. Demonstrating these three skills requires knowledge and understanding of the musical elements, namely:

  • Pitch
  • Dynamics – loud, soft and everything between
  • Tempo
  • Duration – the time value of notes
  • Rhythm – the organisation of the beats
  • Texture – the number of instruments/voices performing
  • Structure – how the music is put together

In Pre-Prep the children learn mainly about pitch, dynamics and tempo by learning rhymes, simple songs and musical games.

Prep One gradually build on their previous year’s work by singing longer songs and learning about duration and rhythm. We introduce the children to various musical instruments and learn the correct performing techniques. They learn how to perform together whilst playing individual or unison parts.

Prep Two continue to develop the skills learned using more complex rhythms, songs and pieces. The children will begin to play music together as an ensemble and in small groups, composing and improvising and learning musical notation.

Prep Three, as well as further developing their skills from last year, will explore harmony, musical vocabulary, structure, chords and simple song writing.

Form One will explore and develop musical knowledge and skills in the following topics:

  • Hands and voices
  • Scales into melody
  • Form and Structure
  • Musical patterns and ostinato
  • Baroque music and texture
  • Musical clichés

Form Two will follow these topics:

  • Chords and rock and roll and blues
  • World music
  • Performing and arranging
  • Hooks and riffs
  • Film and programme music.

Form Three have these topics:

  • Film music part two
  • Performing and arranging part two
  • Ethnic fusion (samba, bhangra, Indian music)
  • Jazz
  • Orchestral music

GCSE Music

The course has four Areas of Study.

Area of study 1

Students carry out research on their chosen instrument and study and perform a piece. A written appraisal then follows.

They then have to compose a piece based on the music they performed and write a brief and a commentary on the composition.

Area of study 2a

This deals with shared music – solo and accompaniment.

Students study Romantic Song, Pop Ballads, the Classical Concerto and Jazz.

Area of study 2b

Shared music – ensembles.

Here students will learn about Indian Classical Music, Gamelan (Indonesian), Baroque and Classical chamber music, the great choral classics and African a capella singing.

Area of study 3

Dance Music.

Dances studied are Waltz, Tango, Salsa, Line Dance, Irish Jigs and Reels, Bhangra, Disco and Club Dance.

Area of study 4

The final study area deals with Programme music and film music.
